Nice and Marseille2
You, me, oui. I like when you say US.
Woke up late, drove along a really pretty, cliffy, windy road to Eze, a smaller hilltop medieval town to the NE of Nice. The weather improved as we ate a typical French breakfast (croissant, French bread, jams, cappuccino, orange juice, and eggs) at the top of the mountain, which made our subsequent pictures all the better. We visited a perfume factory, too.
We visited Rene Socca on the way home for a chickpea flatbread snack (line already formed outside) and made it back to the hotel to change and ready for the festival parade. The parade was very random - full of food or insect-related floats. Most of them had good music, though, and the main thoroughfare was packed with people of really all ages. The kids were busy spraying silly string and throwing confetti. We then tried earnestly to find Co-t Cafe, a small smoothie/cafe joint that was raved about in the Fodor’s guide book. By then the weather was great, and a walk along the beach was worth it even if the cafe was closed when we got there. We found La Maison de Marie (restaurant recommendation from hotel clerk) and made a 2000 reservation. We continued to wander the streets, finding Matisse’s old apartment and eating Fenocchio gelato.
We took a much-needed siesta in the hotel, recouping for our dinner and fireworks outing. The seafood pasta was one of the best Matt’s ever tried. The lobster was just baked to a golden-brown perfection. And the fireworks were big and plenty! We had drinks at a trendy tapas bar to close out the evening, except for also editing and posting the trip’s photos so far.
Wednesday did not go as well. We woke up late (per us), packed, and left to see if we could get Co-t Cafe, but it was still closed. We had breakfast nearby, but upon leaving the parking space, hit a pole hidden by the hood of the rental car. The damage was enough that we debated what to do. We drove to Marseille and Matt spent most of the afternoon on the phone with insurance and internet researching his options. We caught sunset at the top of the city, the Notre Dame a la Garde cathedral, and then ate dinner at a bagel shop (because we were really hungry and didn’t want to wait for restaurants to open at 2000).
Rumor on the street says Bre’s ship won’t get UW on time, so we may have more time tomorrow evening together. Yayy.
